Richard Hayman (Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist)f1

Abstract

The application of an instrument to facilitate the birth of a child is a process that dates back centuries. While there have been few major advances in the basic design of these instruments, many of the indications for their use have dramatically changed over time. This review examines the current position of the obstetric forceps and ventouse in the accoucheur's armoury and provides a brief reminder of the methods of application and techniques of delivery required with each instrument.
