Post-partum collapse

Leonie Penna (Senior Lecturer in Obstetrics)af1, James Clarke (Consultant Anaesthetist)b

Abstract

Post-partum collapse is fortunately a rare condition. However, when it occurs, it may be life threatening. The primary goal is immediate and effective resuscitation of the woman to ensure adequate oxygenation and effective cardiac output. Once resuscitation has commenced, every effort must be made to elucidate the cause and instigate effective treatment. Haemorrhage must be sought and excluded early in the resuscitation process. As post-partum collapse is a rare event, it is important to have adequate ongoing training for all members of staff, and guidelines to help effect successful outcomes.
